It's no secret to the tech and recruitment industries that there is a deficiency in tech talent already. As this trend continues to worsen over time, the projection is that recruitees will need to come from other scholastic disciplines. This is the case with Sarah.
Living in Colorado, Sarah had a goal to work in ground water remediation and hydrology as a geologist. Unfortunately for Sarah, companies were looking for a masters degree or a specialization she just didn't possess. Her bachelors in geology had left her working 3 jobs, none of which were in her chosen profession and which left her wildly unfulfilled.
That is when Sarah decided to do some soul searching. She thought long and hard about what she loved doing as a child. Building with Legos, drawing and playing Zelda happened to top her list. But what profession harnessed her childhood loves? Ultimately, it was programming that brought her excitement back...when the time was right.
One day while working at a shop on Pearl Street in Boulder, CO, Sarah was on break when a patron came up to ask about the Boulder area. They got to talking and sure enough, that man happened to be Ian Barnor, CEO of RecruitSumo.
They spoke at length and after finding out Sarah was interested in Python, (a programming language RS uses) he left his business card along with an invitation to contact him if she had any questions. Sarah did make that contact and soon joined the team to learn more about the industry.
Soon Sarah decided to take the plunge and leave her world behind in order to enter a program called, Turing. She donated many of her belongings, sublet her room, packed her things and moved to Denver for a 7 month intensive training course.
Sarah has since completed the course and has landed a position in Portland. We at RecruitSumo are proud of her and can't wait to follow her journey. After all, it's one that reflects the future of recruitment and programming.
